We've been working with several Australian expats in Hong Kong and Singapore who have spent over 20 years abroad and are now planning their return to Australia in 2025.
A common theme? Many have accumulated significant global wealth but still have relatively modest Australian Superannuation balances—an often underutilised yet tax-efficient structure for returning expats.
For those repatriating, superannuation remains an attractive tax shelter, and there’s a valuable opportunity to make sizeable contributions before the financial year ends on 30 June 2025:
✅ Each individual can contribute up to $120,000 in non-concessional contributions ✅ Couples can collectively add $240,000 towards their individual $1.9 million Pension Caps
(The Pension Cap is the maximum amount of super you can transfer into tax-free retirement income streams during the 'retirement phase' of superannuation. For the 2024-25 financial year, this cap is $1.9 million.)
🔹 From 1 July 2025, take advantage of the ‘3-year bring-forward rule’ to contribute up to $360,000 per person, with the ability to repeat this strategy in four years.
Over a 4-year period, an expat and their spouse could contribute:
📌 $120,000 each before 30 June 2025 📌 $360,000 each in the 2025-26 financial year (triggering the bring-forward rule) 📌 Another $360,000 each before 30 June 2029
That’s $880,000 in total, which—when invested—could place them well on their way toward the Pension Cap.
For returning Australian expats, a well-planned superannuation strategy can provide long-term tax benefits and financial security. If you're navigating your repatriation, now is the time to plan.
Best wishes
